NEWTON SOUTH
HIGH SCHOOL
At Newton South, some of us are living in
the spotlight, while others are living in the action.
Seniors are living as the leaders, and freshman
are just beginning to live the experience. We are
all living our lives.
But, as Ferris Bueller said, “Life moves
pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around
once in a while, you could miss it.” So remember,
rewind for the memories, never fast forward to
the future, and always press play;
live in the moment

The Jock
“I would describe my fashion as
laid-back while still having style;
relaxed yet looking good. For most
days, jeans and a comfy
sweatshirt over a solid color shirt
does the trick. Some days I'll
switch it up, throw in a nice
sweater here and there, but most
of the time I kick it casual. Keeping
that in mind however, nothing ties
together an outfit more than a
jersey. For me, a Chelsea FC jersey
over a pair of dark jeans is the
perfect look for any situation.”
- Andy Webber '1 2
The Hipster
I love to clash colors and play with
shape. I think I've lost sight of the
lines between cool and bizarre,
pretty and garish, but that's all
right. I feel comfortable in
unflattering outfits, as long as
they're somehow imaginative. I
don't know too much about
fashion, I just find clothing a really
fun, accessible means of
experimenting with aesthetics.
Lots of kids at this school dress in
neat ways! I love red velvet and
turquoise earrings and loose,
patterned T-shirts.

The Casual
The Fashionista
Sandy Shen
“I would describe my fashion as a
step above casual, somewhere
between sweats and preppy polos.
New England weather is either
bad or really bad, so comfort and
warmth are a priority. Flannel
shirts are a godsend, and skinny
jeans are my pant of choice. On
any given day, my favorite thing to
wear is a red flannel shirt and
some dark BDG skinny jeans.”
- Jonah Seifer, '1 2
“I think I'd label my style as preppy and
urban with a hint of romanticism,
because I like simple and clean items
like blazers and shorts, but I also really
enjoy wearing really lacy and frilly
things. When I get dressed in the
morning, I kind of start with something I
haven't worn in a while and just go from
there... it usually winds up being
something short that I wear with tights.
I love anything high-waisted because I
think the style looks flattering on almost
anyone. I don't particularly like harem
pants, because I never understood the
appeal of a dropped crotch... however, I
will say that some people, myself not
included, can really pull them off.”

One School, One Book
he first time in the school year that all South students gather in the Field House
was for the One School One Book project on Friday, September 24th. Each year,
a group of teachers decides on a book that is appropriate for all high school
students to read When students arrive to South in September, teachers in all
classes are encouraged to incorporate the book into their lessons. This I Believe
2. edited by Jay Allison and Dan Gediman, was this year's choice. It is a collection
of 75 personal essays on a variety of topics, but all concerning personal
beliefs. This year, for the first time, a block of time was set aside for a school-wide
assembly and smaller breakout groups to pay tribute to this year’s book. English
Department Chair Brian Baron, who helped coordinate the event, described it as
a 1000° a success. The event began with a video that editor Dan Gediman
recorded especially for South. Then, after an introduction from English teacher
David Weintraub, who helped organize the event as well, Principal Joel
Stembndge read aloud his own essay, which expressed his aspirations for a more
open South community Atul Gawande, a surgeon at Brigham and Women’s
Hospital and best-selling author, spoke to the entire student body as well. Next,
students in grades 10 through 12 went to one of 1 5 panels addressing a variety
of topics while freshmen attended a panel on their next four years at South. Each
panel had three to five speakers who relayed their passions and answered
questions. Between Sports and Fitness, Race and Ethnicity, Our Green World, and
the other 1 2 options, every student was empowered to follow their passion to the
panel of their choice. Most students identified the event as a success. Ultimately,
the event captured the goal of the One School One Book project. “We managed to
use a book to pull the community together, to get people talking about ideas,
which was tremendously gratifying and, I hope, useful, for kids,” Baron said.

New Things At South
At the beginning of the 2010 school year, the cafeteria suffered
major budget cuts. Breakfast, sandwiches, wraps, and bagels were
removed from the menu, and the snack bar was shut down. Students
were outraged and disappointed by this decision and complained
about the lower quality and more expensive food being sold in the
cafeteria. Students were forced to either go out for food or bring
lunch from their homes. Hearing the students' frustration, the school
board decided that starting January 201 1 the lunch program would
be revamped to provide a healthier and broader selection of foods for
students to choose from.
New equipment for the wellness courses has provided an influx of
students signing up for Project Adventure. The course is so innovative
that many upperclassmen are surpassing their gym requirements to
sign up. The interest in the program is setting a good example for the
underclassmen and promoting healthy habits.
This year the school is taking its security measures to the next
level. More campus aides have been distributed to parking lots and
bus areas to ensure the students’ safety. Last year an influx of theft hit
the school community. Almost 20% of all students have been victims
to theft in the school. The campus aids are here to provide safety and
reduce this alarming statistic.

I started Plumbean a little over a year ago. I met David through a mutual friend and knew he was an
amazing guitarist. I asked him if he wanted to join a band with me, and he liked the idea. I got Caleb's
number's through a friend, and I texted him and asked him if he wanted to play bass guitar in a band. I
think he was a little weirded out that a random stranger was texting him, but he also liked the idea, so
he agreed. We were having a hard time writing music, and uninspired. I had been friends with Clara for
years, and knew she was good at writing and playing music, so I asked her to join Plumbean. Now that
there were four of us, we needed a drummer. We experimented with a few drummers here and there,
all who didn't exactly fit our style of music. Then we met Emmett, who we asked to join our band
because he fit our alternative/soft rock sound perfectly, and he also got along with all of us really well.
We are now busy recording at the recording studio Emmett's dad works at, and are expecting an album
out soon.

Our band got started after we all met in a music program in 2009. All of us became really close friends.
At first, we played music just for kicks, but we all had really great chemistry with each other, so we
wanted to start a band for real. Soon enough, we started playing shows. In 2010, we played an opening
set for the band Living Syndication, played a set on the main stage during Dedham Day, and played in
the Norwood Flag Day parade. Along with covers, we write some original music. It gets a little
complicated to practice sometimes, because we live in different towns. But we try and make it work. We
tend to switch instruments a lot. We've had ups and downs, but it makes us stronger as a group. It just
makes us love playing music that much more.

Working at the GAP Outlet is so much fun. I get to talk to people, fold clothes and use cash
registers - all things I love! But seriously, having a job is really great because working gives me
time during the week to relax and take my mind off of the rest of world. When I fold clothes, I
don't have to think about my AP Psych test or if I'm ever going to understand the point of
derivatives, I just have to fold what's in front of me. The people are also nice and it's nice to
get out of Newton sometimes. And finally, the 30% off discount and a paycheck every week
doesn't hurt! So, as I say to my friends all the time, 'Come visit me at the GAP! It's so

Individualized Senior Experience
The WISE program is an elective that offers qualified
seniors to spend Term four doing an internship at a
business of their choice or working on an academic project
of their own design. Unlike previous years, students have
the option to choose to work part-time or full-time on the
project. The new system will allow students to drop all or
some academic subjects for the last term of their senior
year, giving them time to work on the WISE project. Senior
projects/internships are geared toward helping students
to explore personal interests, possible career choices,
special talents, research projects, or community service
projects. The goal of the WISE program is to allow
seniors to engage in a different kind of learning experience
outside of the classroom, as a way to help them transition
to college or to work. The program hopes to foster
independence, self-confidence, and a sense of personal
responsibility, as the students take charge of their learning.
The program requires creating a journal, writing on a blog,
meeting with a mentor, and doing a presentation about the
internship/project at the end of the term. The WISE
program is an exciting opportunity for seniors to learn
about themselves and the adult world, while still in high
school.

The Peru Language Program is a unique trip that combines Spanish classes,
history, and community service. On this trip, students spend their weekends
going on excursions to various archaeological sites including Machu Picchu
and the Sacred Valley. During the week, they spend their mornings taking
Spanish classes and their afternoons volunteering at different orphanages.
Students spend time with their host families during the evenings and
sometimes take a salsa or cooking class, depending on their interest.
According to Ms. Maher, "The Peru trip is a great way to see a different
culture, and how people, who have significantly less means, live.” After going
on this trip, students will definitely see an improvement in their Spanish.
Additionally, most Students say that their favorite part of the trip is working in
the orphanage and that it's an amazing experience. The Peru trip is a great
opportunity in many ways, although Ms. Maher warns, "it's not for princes and
princesses, you have to have an open mind, be willing to roll with the punches,
and know that things won't always go as planned.”

GLOBAL
EDUCATION
Nicaragua
The annual Nicaragua trip presents a great opportunity for students
at South to understand life in a developing country. Nicaragua is a
country with a “very different level of prosperity” than the United
States, yet South students always have a great time on the trip.
Students are completely immersed into this Spanish speaking
country, living with host families that speak only Spanish. In previous
years during the trip, students have spent their time painting schools
to improve classroom quality. A highlight of the trip is the food, which
according to Mr. Parlin is “amazingly delicious.. .the host families tend
to cook a lot of meat and fish.” Although the poverty in Nicaragua is
extreme, “jarring and sad,” the people there are very friendly and
open. South students particularly enjoyed playing games with the
children. Some students loved the trip so much that they formed a
strong connection with the Nicaraguan people and community, and
have visited Nicaragua to keep in touch.
China Exchange
Prague Spring
Each year over April break, students of all grades have the
opportunity to participate in the Prague Spring program. In
preparation for the trip, students attend weekly workshops
and watch history films to learn information relevant to the
trip. When abroad, students go on excursions to music halls,
museums, theaters, galleries, and historical sites, such as
concentration camps. Unlike previous years, this year
students will be able to meet with students from Weston High
School, who are also going on the trip, prior to departure.
Advisors want students to be able to connect what they have
learned in high school with the sites visited on the program. It
is a truly life altering experience for the students that leaves
them in love with Europe and hopeful to study at these cities in
the future. As Mr. White says, “this is not a trip, its a program”
Every year many dedicated students take part in the
Newton-Beijing Jingshan School Exchange Program. Prior to
the program, participants attend an intensive six-week summer
institute to improve their Mandarin skills and to learn about
Chinese customs. In the Fall, a group of students from the
Jingshan School arrive in the United States and experience
education from a Western perspective. Similarly, Newton
students spend their spring semesters in Beijing for four
months and enroll in a wide variety of classes ranging from
science to martial arts. All classes are in Chinese. During their
stay, students live with host families, attend classes with their
host sibling, and experience the different dimensions of the
Chinese culture, through sightseeing and communicating in
Mandarin. According to Ms. Fong, this is a great opportunity
for students “to expand their horizons and acquire leadership
skills essential for life after college.”
Russia Exchange
Each April, students studying Russian have the opportunity to
become involved in the Russian Exchange program. During
their two-week stay in Russia, students attend various classes
with their host siblings in the mornings, go on excursions
around St. Petersburg in the afternoons, and enjoy dinner at
their host family's house in the evenings. Similarly, in the fall,
the Russian students experience Western culture firsthand,
attending classes and sightseeing in Boston. According to Ms.
Leveille, all the classes at School 238 are taught in Russian,
and students love “to have the opportunity to improve their
Russian skills with their peers.” Every year students also enjoy
working with the English classes and helping to teach basic
English grammar skills to the Russian students. In the end,
students have a great time and gain self-confidence from this
opportunity.
25
Halloween
One day a year everyone has the
opportunity to pretend to be someone
they're not. Whether it's a witch, Lady Gaga,
or even the Scream, outrageousness is
encouraged. Seeing fellow students
dressed up head to toe in their best
costumes is an uplifting sight. It boosts
morale and emphasizes the importance of
having fun and self-expression. Even though
the real Halloween fun does not start until
after school, students wear their silliest
and scariest costumes to school and hope
to be the most unique. These include
outfits ranging from "Flavor Flav" to
Tinkerbell. Halloween costumes definitely
boost school spirit at the end of October,
and will continue to do so for years to
come.

free blocks
Finding out that you have a free block instead of
a class is an amazing feeling. It's a break, a time where
you can choose who you want to hang out with and
where you want to go. For the underclassmen, this
time is usually restricted to school property, but to
those who have a car the possibilities are endless. This
could be a time to catch up on homework, hang out
with friends outside the classroom or even get some
caffeine to get you through the rest of your day. Free
blocks help break up the otherwise long day into
bearable time slots that can be easily pushed through.
As students, we should all take full advantage of these
free periods and live in the moment, or as a Latin
student might say, “carpe diem!”

Studio Art
When one considers Studio Art, one may call to mind an image of an artist
persistently and patiently working on a piece, that, over time, is polished and
eventually perfected. This illusion is far from reality. Our reality is the knowledge of
a maior assignment due the following day, and all to show for it: a blank canvas. It
is in those moments— the moments of last minute panic— that our minds are the
most active as we are hard-wired for the creation of art. Senior Michele
Abercrombie says, "By the time dawn rolls around, we have a night's worth of
perseverance and skill before us; making the entire situation that much more the
worth while, as our eyes bathe in the presence of our less than perfect, but more
than remarkable, masterpieces.”

Ceramics creates such a vivid
environment and attracts such
creative people. Even the
atmosphere is relaxing to the
students. This course provides
skills to not only become a
talented artist, but to also meet peers.
The program connects people with similar
interests that would not have met otherwise. Junior Sylvie Evans
says, “It is very rewarding to have a break in the middle of the day,
go to ceramics, and hang out with friends while creating a piece of
art. The arts department at South is a strong program that
promotes creativity in a way that the core academic classes
cannot.”

Music comes from your heart. It is a song of thoughts,
memories, and dreams. Music puts our emotions into
a melody that plays a soundtrack to our lives. Music is
a language that we all speak and understand. As a
musician, I have been able to put my soul into every

harmonize their voices into a single stream of music in which every note and
pause portrays a perfect balance of emotion and grace.

^ Mad rig
We start off every B Block with a
selection of warm-ups to get our
voices ready to sing, but the hour
usually involves much more than
lust singing, even though we do a
whole lot of that too. Madrigals is
where about 50 juniors and seniors
come together to make some
serious music, ranging from
spirituals to combined pieces with
the orchestra to holiday carols to
anything else that Mr. Youngman
chooses. We never sit still, so the
fact that we sing in many concerts
throughout the year is quite a feat.
Mr. Youngman's lessons are
interspersed with detailed stories of
his high school adventures, his twin
daughters, and his preparation for a
trip to China. On any given day, we
will laugh, talk too much, and sing
with enough breath and resonance
to make the piano ring (if we're
lucky].. ..well, we don't always achieve
the breath and resonance part, but
we promise to try! Overall Madrigals
is a fun environment where we
come together in laughter in music -
an all-around good time!

^ Choral
If you were to ask any one
taking chorus what their
favorite class in their schedule
is, they would say chorus. In

about how to sing, but we also
learn about deceptive
cadences and agogic accents.
Chorus is not just a class, but
it is a way of life.

^ Vocal En
High School can be intimidating to
start. Freshman year, students can
\ sign up to take Vocal Ensemble, an
introduction to the higher level
choirs. They learn to sing with
breadth and resonance, while
! having fun with classmates and the
conductor, Mr. Youngman. It is
bonding time for the freshman and
a relaxing part of a stressful day to
just sing and have fun.

Haram
Harambee, Newton South's sole
gospel choir, is now in it's fifth year.
Being more diverse than most other
choirs and classes at Newton South, it
provides an atmosphere that most
students don't get to have in their
classroom setting. The music sung is
primarily gospel, however, -Mrs.
Sumner, the director, introduces jazz,
rhythm and blues, and Negro
spirituals to educate the class about
various types of music. With no
audition requirement, the class is built
up of various skill levels and
experience, open to anyone who is
willing to try. This class not only
focuses on music, but also supplies
the venue to get to know students,
who otherwise would not have met, to
educate each other. Not to mention
it’s A LOT of fun!

In the beginning, the Frosh Play was an after school activity that I
knew would somehow end up in a performance. Being an all
freshman production we were all very excited for our introduction to
South Stage. We were also slightly nervous, because we are,
well. ..freshman. However, I didn't realize how much fun I would have,
how many new things I would learn, and the new friends I would
make. The name our show was “Organized Chaos” which described
our rehearsals perfectly. Each skit had 4 or 5 rehearsals, and then
we were off to Tech Week. Rehearsals always started with a game
and ended with notes from out director, Courtney Wrenn. Towards
the end of our production, we added props, costumes, and a set. This
is when the show really started to come to life. We rehearsed with
props, costumes and a set for 5 days, and then it was opening night.
Each performance had its flaws, like any show, but the final outcome
was something to be proud of. As an overall success Frosh Play
2010 was an outstanding introduction to South Stage and all it has
to offer.

Going into Vaudeville, I didn't
know what to expect. I only
knew the style in which we
would be performing. Despite
our meager rehearsal time,
Vaudeville was, from the knife-
swinging to the dancing and
singing, a great start to the
2010-1 1 South Stage
season, selling out the Lab
Theater on Friday and
Saturday nights! It truly was a
bonding experience that I
enjoyed being part of very
much. This is the first year
that a Vaudeville-type show
has been done as South, and I
hope that it will continue as a
great alternative to the Fall
Play.

The cast and crew of Lebensraum is a
group of connected, hard-working people.
Everyone was a bit skeptical at first, but, in
the end, we put together a great show
because no one gave up. The performance
was truly an ensemble show. The cast was
so invested in the success of the play along
with personal success. Being in the
ensemble does not have to mean being in
the background, and Lebensraum
exemplified that perfectly.
- Madeline Schulman, Senior
Lebensraum
Lebensraum is a what-if
fantasy about the German
chancellor who invites six
million Jews to move to
Germany and to receive
homes and jobs. The play
focuses on the reactions of
of people around the world
and focuses on the Linksy
family in Gloucester,
Massachusetts as well as
the Gieslings in
Bremerhaven, Germany.
Sam Linsky, played by Sam
Dorfman, and Anna Geisling,
played by Madeline
Schulman, fall in love despite
coming from different
families. The show had a
really great turnout. The
director, Nancy Curran
Willis, was really thoughtful
and kind, and helped the
cast every step of the way. It
was so fun performing and
bonding with the cast, and
that is really what
SouthStage is meant to do.
Because of that, and the
wonderful show we put
together, Lebensraum was
a success.

Hairspray was an event. Its announcement as the choice for the Winter
Musical got people talking-’Finally, a musical people want to see!”.. .’’I've
never done theatre but I need to try out for this!”. ..’’This is going to be the
most diverse casting pool South Stage has ever seen.” Beyond the hype
(which ended up, I think, to be completely validated], Hairspray was a rich
and constructive experience for all involved. A cast of more than fifty
students required intense cohesion and collaboration; the principal actors
encountered a challenging rainbow of character roles; the tech crew,
costume crew, and the pit orchestra faced the realization of a fantasy.
Underclassmen, upperclassmen, newbies, vets, and (finally) students of a
variety of races came together over two months to create what I (and
many) think to be South's most electric show in years.

DENEBOLA
The official newspaper of
NSHS
This is for the all-inclusive band of
goons - the ones who come in after
devastating sports losses, brutal school
days, and tiring step-squad practices, ready
to set up camp in 9202. When we started,
they doubted us. Those 49ers thought the
50th year of Denebola was a ticking time
bomb waiting to explode - but we sure
proved them wrong. We cried, we lost
sleep, and then we cried and lost more
sleep, and eventually fell into manic
depression: but it could not have been more
worth it. With a grad issue as boss as
Jagress’s whip and staff more diverse than
Mr. White’s job history, we gave Denebola
one hell of a ride for a 50th volume. With
our efficiency skyrocketing past Justin’s
passion for Madonna, we were never an
almost-done publication - we had something
more. This paper was our baby, and we
were almost pregnant. - Ashan Singh

ROAR
The Lion's Roar is more than an award-winning newspaper. Roar reports on stories,
trends and events that are relevant to South's students. Whether the story is light and
humorous, like our columns and 6 Degrees of Separation spreads, or hard-hitting and
tough to uncover, like our centerfolds and controversial features stories, it is always
written with the student reader in mind. We have a blast producing a newspaper read by
students and teachers alike. Though only a few seniors run the show, the paper would be
nothing without hardworking contributors, reporters, editors, photographers and artists.
Roar is truly a community and family, who give students a publication relevant to their
lives.

Regulus
This year, Regulus made some changes: we switched
to a bigger homeroom, got a professional
photographer, restructured our staff, and yes, we
even added boys!! If we do say so ourself, our new
improvements really paid off. We may even bring our
yearbook to NSPA next year...twa...We are a club that
comes together for late nights every deadline,
stressing over using slow computers and ID-ing
unknown students we are still mildly convinced don't
exist. We are a club that slaves for months sorting
pictures and collecting information for the dreaded
sports scoreboard (whose idea was that
anyway!?!?!]. We're a club that bonds over silly
candids, perfect 1 pica lines, and really cute “got
mine” buttons on our backpacks, (yes, those do relate
to the yearbook...] I'd like to thank Herff Jones for
meeting us in Kansas City and making this entire
process possible! We couldn't have done it without
you Herff! But seriously, the yearbook is so much
more than a collection of pictures and names thrown
together; there is no other object from high school
that you will revisit and treasure more. We hope that
you like the yearbook, and that you are able to always
rewind to the memories.

G.S.A
The Newton South Gay-Straight Alliance is the oldest public school GSA in the country; it has been
around since the early 1990's. For the last several years, there have been about 60 to 70 people on
the GSA email list and around 20 to 30 people who show up to meetings consistently every Monday. A
typical GSA meeting consists of good thing/bad thing (where we share two things about our day), a
discussion or debate about Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) issues, and some planning
for the next GSA-organized event. The GSA is open to everybody, and we do our best to make everyone
comfortable, therefore, we do not ask about a person's sexual orientation.
Throughout the year, we plan in-school events like TGBLAD (Transgender Bisexual Gay Lesbian
Awareness Day), Day of Silence, and Day of Action to educate our community on LGBT issues. We also
attend events planned by other LGBT groups such as Pride marches, BAGLY (Boston Alliance of Gay
and Lesbian Youth) dances, and GLSEN (Gay and Lesbian Student Education Network) conferences.
We welcome everyone, so come to Room 2301 during Monday J-Block to check us out!

Model U.N.
Thursday J-Blocks are spent discussing upcoming fund-raisers and
having enthralling mock U.N debates. Assuming the position of
delegates from various countries around the world, we spend our
time debating and coming up with peaceful resolutions that mimic
what real life representatives do every day. Although we are a club
lacking in experience, the diligence that each member of our club
shows definitely makes up for that. We are confident that we speak
on behalf of everyone in Model U.N when we say that we are very
excited for another year of conferences. People sometimes come
up to us and ask “What's Model U.N?” Our response? '“We're like
Mock Trial - but better!”

ASO [Newton South's Asian Student Organization] is an
organization that seeks to spread knowledge of all Asian
cultures, not only to other Asians, but to everyone. We
do this in a variety of ways. Every other week, we hold
members' meetings, where anyone who would like to
come (room 3102) joins. We, the ASO officers, have
prepared a few activities that introduce aspects of
different Asian cultures. Simultaneously, ASO holds
fundraisers (like Boba tea sales, Ramen sales,
Valentine's sales, etc) throughout the year to raise
money for our annual Asian Night. Asian Night is a
concert/ talent show, where students perform. The
audience consists of students from all over MA, and
Asian Night has proudly sold out every year. With Asian
Night, ASO seeks to share Asian culture with multiple
schools in an enjoyable way, Additionally, the money
raised both by Asian Night and by various ASO
fundraisers is donated to hand-picked, non-profit
organizations that lend a hand to countries suffering

participate in practices, compete at several meetings, and help make
team decisions. The math team has three captains this year: Tomer,
Tony, & Hyun. The captains will be organizing practices and basically
keeping the team going. Math team has two coaches, Mr. Petrizzi S
Mr. Rattendi, who check in with practices and bring us to the
competitions. We strongly encourage anyone who's interested in
math to join and come to practices. There is no entry test, and for a
reason - anyone with an interest in math is perfect for math team. If
you're good, you can win awards at competitions. If you don't win any
awards, stick with it and you'll probably win some in a year or two.

N.E.W.
Newton Educational
Workshops
We would like to start off by saying that it has been a great pleasure
to have been a part of N.EW. for the past 4 years. We love N.E.W.
because it is a club that anyone can be a part of, no matter what his
or her interests are. Members have the chance the share their
passions with 4th and 5th graders through teaching classes like
cooking, sports, tie-dying, and dance. We believe this component of
sharing gives the young students a chance to explore, discover and
pursue a potentially lifelong interest. Not only does the program give
high school students a chance to share their passions, but it also
provides them with the opportunity to take on leadership positions.
We all came into high school looking to grow both academically and
personally so the fact that anyone could take on a leadership position,
share their passions, and help young kids explore a range of interests
was a huge incentive to join. Overall, being in NEW has been amazing
and we know that come graduation, the memories we made here will
stay with us for the rest of our lives.

The Taekwondo Club of Newton South High School has approximately
50 members. The New Captain, Inyong Chung, a black belt, now leads
our weekly practices, which include, stretching, practicing kicking,
learning to ki-ap, and doing forms. The Taekwondo Club also does
training exercises weekly. These exercises include jogging [outside in
spring/summer), synchronized jumping jacks, push-ups, squat jumps,
and many more. At the end of the year most Club Members go on a
camping trip with the whole club, during which we do many different
exercises and invigorating activities. By joining the Taekwondo Club
many members have achieved physical and mental bonuses. Most
members walk out with more confidence than before and a new found
amazement at their new level of flexibility. Many have even continued
Taekwondo at other dojangs. The Taekwondo Club, a club full of
benefits, welcomes all newcomers of any experience level.

Invisible Children
Invisible Children is an organization that raises
awareness and money for the child soldiers in Joseph
Kony's rebel army, which originated in Northern
Uganda and has not spread to many other places in
central Africa. The national Invisible Children
organization's mission is to raise enough awareness
of the ongoing war through media and stories that
they eventually end Joseph Kony's rebel army. As a
school group we raise money and awareness of
Invisible Children. We are involved in schools for
schools, which pairs up schools in America with
schools in Northern Uganda, and our school sends
the money we raise to the school. We have fund-
raisers, raffles, and some video days, and we meet
every Wednesday J-Block to discuss new ideas and
talk about recent news on Invisible Children. This is an
amazing and unique cause, and we're all so happy to
be about to do our part in helping the world.
The philosophy club ponders the deep questions of
life and all the tangents that arise from those
questions. This curious, diverse group has argued
the existence of love, whether murder can be
justified, bioethics, religion's role in society,
immortality and the effects of time travel. Snacks
are a bonus to hanging out and sharing views on
anything and everything.

Break Dance
Break Dance club was started on the basic
principle that anyone and everyone has the right
to learn to dance whether or not they have the
time, space, and money. I Anybody is allowed to
join and and you will find your own style of the
unique art of bboying. We have professional
dancers visit often so that our members can
learn from the experts. Becoming a member of
this club is a great experience and opportunity.
Every single one of us feels that this is part of our
identity, which is spectacular because many high
school students have a hard time finding a way to
identify themselves. Not only do we meet during
J-block, but we have optional field trips to Faneuil
Hall to meet with, dance with, and learn from the
street performers. Bring your swag!

Rugby
What is rugby you ask? Simply put, Rugby is the
greatest sport ever invented. Not only do you get to
kick the opposing teams behind, afterwards you
become the closest of friends. Similar to football,
Rugby is a type of game where the objective is to
score on the opposing teams side throwing only
backwards and playing positions such as loosehead
prop, scrum half, fullback, eight man and of course
the dedicated hooker. Unlike many other sports,
Rugby is a game where you can let out your most
angry feelings on the field without protection or
padding. Most referees let you tackle, hit or knock
people down on your way to the try zone. Now, you’re
probably wondering, isn’t that dangerous and can’t a
player get severely injured? No. Not only has the
Newton South Women’s Rugby Team won ALL but
one of its games its first season, there were little to
no injuries at all. Besides a few bumps, bruises and
cuts we all walked away with a few wins in our
pockets and team spirit in our hearts.

Adventure
Outdoor Adventure Club was designed for outdoor
enthusiasts to share their passion for the outdoors with
like minded individuals and embrace the wonderful world
we live in. A club that has stayed very small and under the
radar of most throughout its existence, we have worked
this year to expand it and make it available and known to
more people. Our annual New Hampshire trip was a huge
success and involved a weekend filled with snow shoeing
and hiking in a secluded cabin in scenic New Hampshire.
In addition, we are planning more trips to come. Outdoor
Adventure Club, a place where onesies and togas are
always welcome and playdoh is held in high regards. We
promise it will be the best 30 seconds of your life.

Animal Rights
In the Animal Rights Club, our main goal is to spread
awareness about animal cruelty. Most people do not
recognize the extent to which animals are tortured and
killed on a daily basis, not only for food, but also for
products and fashion. As a club, we aim to educate our
school community along with the greater Boston
community about animal cruelty and animal rights. We
go to protests in Boston and in the surrounding area in
order to actively educate our greater community, and in
school we spread awareness through handouts and word
of mouth. Our priority is not to make people become
vegetarian, or even to convince people to drastically
change their lifestyle. We simply want people to think
more about the choices that they make in regards to
animals' well-being. If people can even begin to have that
in the back of their minds, that's an excellent first step.

“Hello fellow minions of Mr.K's office, WE ARE THE

Horowitz. “It doesn't even have to make sense,” says
Rachel Schy. “F* * * you Clara,” chirps Susannah Glickman.
"M-m-m-m-m-m-m-m-m...toasty,” Aaron Davidoff whispers
in a dream. “Bonjour, baguette-ooh-la-la!” exclaims Maddie
surprised. "Dear santa, I, Jordan, do indeed, inquire of ye,

Newton South's student-run improv troupe -Children of the

apparently requires each member to be brunette and male.
Candy Corn is a family; we laugh together, we cry together, we
steal each other's clothes-there's nothing that we wouldn't do
for one another. Every Monday and Thursday, “Corn” gets
together and practices being spontaneous. Current band-
members include seniors Sydney Morin, Harry Neff, Sophia
Zarsky, and Luke Shanahan, Junior Jackie Lebovits, Sophomore
Dan Kaufman, and Freshmen Nicky Leiter, Connor Donahue
and Ian Greer. Each year we have: a token jock, that loud kid
who makes you uncomfortable with his/her indie clothes, and
that really cute pal who you didn’t know went to South until now.

Wrestling
The Wrestling team this year has dealt with some difficult line up issues early
on in the season, however, we now seem to be able to turn things around. We
now have a full line up and are beginning to work together. Our team has
. several outstanding wrestlers representing our program this year, but without
the hard work of everyone in the line up, we have had difficulty winning matches.
Despite these problems, we hope to turn this around after our first win of the
season over Weston.

Boys Soccer
Pass It On
Coming into the season with a strong core of returning seniors and a group of promising
underclassmen, the Boys Varsity Soccer team ended up falling short of its initial goal of
qualifying for the State Tournament. Despite this, the team came together over the season.
The team worked hard starting from double sessions in August to the end of the season in
late October. In Head Coach John Conte’s second year, returning Varsity players stepped
into greater leadership roles, helping the new players adjust to the level of play at the Varsity
level. A number of juniors stepped up, filling positions vacated by last year’s graduated
seniors, illustrating the depth of the program. Playing in the always tough Dual County
League, the team was competitive with some of the top teams in the state, forcing these
teams to play their best. Looking ahead to next season, the team graduates a lot of seniors
but should be continue to be a strong team in the DCL.

This year the girls’ cross-country team had a huge incoming class of dedicated and
enthusiastic freshman. The veterans and the new runners were able to come together

the beginning of the season. At the end of the season every member of the team was

BOYS CROSS-
COUNTRY
Newton South Boys' Cross-country had a great 2010 season. We gained a lot of
new faces, both freshmen and upperclassmen, but our young, relatively
inexperienced team came a long way in a short time. We developed our running
prowess and racing skill under our new coach, Ted Norton, and finished the
season with a 5-4 record and a 5th place team finish at the league meet. The
team has come a long way, and as we say goodbye to our veteran seniors who
have achieved so much, we look forward to the prospects of our team in the

My whole life I have always been
a soccer player. This year
however, when searching for a
winter sport to keep me in shape,
I decided to do indoor track. I had
never really been a runner and I
didn’t even like running. But, I
knew that for soccer that it
would be worth it. Now, at the
end of the season, I know that I
made the right choice. Although
running in the snow and cold
weather was miserable, I have
come to enjoy running for the
most part. I liked being able to
set a goal and accomplish it on

Girls Track
In the past, the Indoor Track and Field team has won many meets and has proved themselves to be a
force in the DCL. Our girls compete at the highest levels, dominating the DCL, proving to be a strong
force at the State and All-State level, and competing for the highest honors at Nationals. Despite the
many girls that graduated last year, the girls' team has many strong returning girls and many
promising underclassman to meet the high expectations of the Newton South Track Team. There was
also a change in the coaching staff from last year and the new Boys' head coach, who is also the
sprints coach, had to work with the captains to create balance on the team again. The Girls' team has
united once again and has grown a lot since the beginning of the season. The close relationship
between the three girls' captains has allowed the rest of the team to follow suit and work together for
a common goal. The Girls' team never fails to make their competitors fight, but we tend to finish
stronger.

Fall, 2010
The 2010-1 1 Varsity Dance Team was stronger than ever this year. With
18 dancers, we were extremely successful. We danced at every home football
and basketball game and thrilled the crowd (especially with our version of Michael
Jackson’s “Thriller”). We competed at various New England high school dance
competitions and were awarded with many first place trophies. Every single one
of the dancers worked extremely hard and it showed. Whether we were spacing
formations in freezing rain, or gearing up for the exciting pep rally, we wore smiles
on our faces. The Varsity Dance Team brings hard work, spirit, and fun to the

Football
Boys Varsity, 2010
The Newton South Football Program not only taught a young
team the game of football, but focused a great deal on the
fundamental lessons that go hand in hand with the game. Though the
record may not reflect it, under its four captains, Jeffrey Alkins,
Jerrett Atkinson, Brandon Caldwell, and Tyler McGarry, the Lions had
one of its most successful years, contributing to the growth of the
program, and reminding all those who played the true meaning of
what it is to be a Newton South Lion. After all, there is nothing quite
like the game of football.

made the varsity team, as one of
only two sophomores to make

Girl's Volleyball
Ifhe girls volleyball team had an amazing season this year! We all bonded, becoming a volleyball family.
|yVe worked hard and used our teamwork to have a successful season. Focusing on our motto “ Some
/vish for it, we work for it,” we all realized that the hard work (even all of the pancake ladders] paid off.
The high note of the season was the battle at Acton- Boxborough. We played out hearts out and
scratched by with a 3-2 win. By focusing on our big rocks, little rocks, sand and water, we managed to
do some damage with a final record of 14-5. Throughout the season, we all realized that volleyball
seeds teamwork but by the end, we became a unit, a team that is now and will always be our family.
We all had a blast this season! Good luck to next year's team!
D.S. We as a team hope to pass on our traditions and legacies and of course our (Jess)Hel 1 Cover

Dear NSHSV/JVFH1 □,
Though our record may not reflect it, we have had a great season and we are proud
of every single one of you. In face of defeat, we kept our spirits high and never gave up.
We improved our individual skills and our ability to work as a team.
We also had some unforgettable times. Remember when were abandoned by our bus
driver? Dr when we all gathered around to hear freshman gossip (Marucci included?)
What about all those accusations of questionable pre-game habits or that time we chilled
in Norty's artsy crib? And who could forget that fateful day when we found out we have in-
laws on our team? We will miss this team so much, but hope that in years to come
NSHSFH really will reverse the curse. Thank you for an amazing season.

Boy's Gymnastics I
Last year, for those of you who don't know, I was the only member of the team. I was the only one
keeping it alive. It took a lot in order to make sure NSHS gymnastics didn't meet its end; I competed
alone last year, representing my school the best I could during each meet. Now look; see the faces of
the future of NSHS gymnastics. These new recruits will lead the team next season with their new found
skills and continue to help keep the team alive long after I leave NSHS. Never submit; because I refused (
to submit to quitting, I revived what was nearly dead. Keep going no matter what; best of luck to all of
ji
you. There's always hope. Even when you feel you're staring into nothingness keep walking; there's a light .

The girls ice hockey team has worked incredibly hard this year. With only a few girls on the team,
each and every girl has truly stepped up and given her all. Ever since 8th grade I have been

continue to grow because for 5 years now we have come so far.

Trying to establish ourselves as a power house in the DCL, Newton South added
several tough opponents to a challenging schedule. Newton South embraced this
challenge and beat some strong opponents early on. Battling hard in games and
practices each and every day, we had strong senior captains along with some
very talented young freshman who have kept showing promise throughout the
their season. We look forward to the rest of the season and hopefully achieving
our remaining goal of making the state tournament. Coaches Ryberg, Poutas, and
Murph have continued to support us throughout the season. Our fans have
continued to support us throughout the season. The Newton South 201 1 Hockey

Cross Country Ski
Nordic skiing is constantly evolving winter sport at Newton South. While the sport itself is
relatively new to the school, it has drastically changed throughout its existence. The team
has remained small each season, creating a one-of-a-kind, close-knit group of athletes.
Whether skiing uphill or downhill, we all have had so many good times on the slopes as
we worked to improve. Challenging the Nordic Playground, surviving the Flatlands, and
conquering Mt. Weston, we've come far. This year the team consists mostly of seniors.
We are so proud of all the students who were willing to try something new even in their
last year of high school. We truly feel everyone has left their comfort zone and pushed
him or herself to achieve more than ever expected. Along with our seniors, we have a
handful of freshman that will allow the team to continue and evolve for years to come.
The younger members continue to surprise us every practice and race as we watch
them progress. We could not have asked for a better group of people. Our team is family
and we look forward to returning and experiencing Nordic ski team’s continued evolution.

I have been swimming since I was 8
years old. I like swimming because it
is both an individual effort and a
team effort. Also, it gets you into
shape. My inspiration is my coach
Joe Bernal; he is a two time Olympic
coach. My other inspiration is my
dad, who swam in college and keeps
me motivated. My goals for
swimming are to keep dropping my
times throughout college and to
have fun. The hardest aspect of
swimming is the 5am workouts
during the week.

SWIMMING AND DIVING
y
Newton South Swimming and Diving (NSSD) has gone through many changes in the past
four years. From new coaches to a new pool, each season is never the same as the last.
Despite all of the change NSSD had a very successful season. At NSSD we truly understand
the value of hard work, sportsmanship, teamwork and spirit. We are always celebrating our
victories and learning from our defeats. After losing numerous seniors last year, NSSD has
become a team comprised of many under-classman. With so many new swimmers many
members of the team were almost complete strangers to one another at the first captains
practice in November, but through the season NSSD has grown into a loving family. We will
always remember the grueling breathless practices, the relay for life and watching many
members of NSSD swim their hearts out at sectionals and states. The team commends
head coach Ethan Treat, assistant coach Maureen Gavin and diving coach Maria Milano for
their dedication to the team. NSSD hopes to continue its spirit and dominance in years to
come at South. - Jossie Forman

Girl's Basketball
rhe girl's basketball team is extremely close which makes everything so much better
when we go out and play with each other everyday of the winter season. We all have
:ommon goals and work together to achieve them. We have an amazing coaching staff
;hat is so dedicated to helping us on and off the court in everything we do. We have a
unique way of playing and that is to mostly have fun and not think about our every move.
A/e work on the mental aspect of the game a lot We also trust each other and love the
Competition that we give each other day in and day out. We work as hard as we can to
nake the season the longest that we possibly can because we will miss this team so

Boys Basketball
The boys basketball team is off to a great start this season. They
have continued to improve their wins. With new additions to the
team, they worked hard on both skills and team play. The boys
basketball team recognizes the value of hard work and the
importance of sportsmanship. They celebrate victories, learn from
their defeats, and continue to strive for perfection. Everyone has
passion for the sport, and it shows every time the team takes the
court for games. With strong leadership from this year's captains,
the team expects to continue the success they have had early on in
the season. The team has a lot of talent, with fans like theirs, it seems
there will be no stopping Newton South's boys basketball team.

Girl's Gymnastics
Graduating eight seniors last year the girl’s gymnastics team faced a serious deficiency
but with the help of some great newbies the south girl’s gymnastics team was able to put
up a fair fight and maintain a successful record. Despite the minor obstacles we had to
face— bloody rips on bars, wobbles and falls on beam, mat burns from vault, a couple of
tears, and of course the most unavoidable, the wedgies on floor. We were able to flip,
soar, and twist through the season with grace. Although we didn’t always get to the
meets with ease (three cheers for the bus driver!!] with a couple of detours, we were able
to fight it out with even the toughest competitors. With the continuous support and
spotting of our Coaches, Coach Beaupre and Coach Rosenfeld as well as each other, our
team was able to never give up and always get up and try again. Vault, Bars, Beam, Floor,
South gymnastics can really score!

Step Squad is about more than just a few coordinated claps and stomps.
It’s about effort, dedication, and above all else: teamwork. Our newly

hard, we had our ups and downs, but we persevered, showing South that
there will be a Step Squad, always and forever. You think you have

Junior Powderpuff
The Junior Girl's Powderpuff team fell just 20 yards short
of a victory against the rival Seniors in this year's grudge
match. While the Seniors are supposed to win every year,
the Class of 201 2 proved victory would not be so easy this
go around. Led by quarterback Ana Horowitz, runnings
backs Hannah Freidman and Mikayla Bogart, and
linebackers Aley Lewis and Chloe-Jackson Unger, the
juniors are looking forward to taking out their anger from
the loss in next year's installment. - Dan Frechter

Senior Powderpuff
This is the nose-snapping, head-banging, and wrist-
breaking crew of ladies. The ones who, after the first year
of anti-senior sentiment from the officiating crew, were
STILL able to proudly, and cleanly win a clean match of
American football against our subordinates. Whether it
was Celia’s unstoppable ground efforts, Chloe’s aerial
attack, a defense often comparable to the 76 Steelers, or
Lily Konowitz’s outstanding sideline efforts, the 2011
Seniors’ victory was a surprise to no one. For the first
Itime since forever, Newton South’s annual Powderpuff
match was not only cleanly one by the Senior class, but
was ALSO accompanied by and incredibly topical and racy
flash dance to the number one song in both Austria AND
Belgium, “We No Speak Americano. So among the
numerous injuries, on (the date of powder puff], us Seniors
bled orange to the end, and after a few backfield hits from
Christene Chase, we emerged victorious. KBO, 2011, and
may the nostrils of Sydney Morin rest in peace. - Coach

Ms. Eng, like most high school seniors, was
unsure of what she wanted to do when she
finished college. Not thinking about
becoming a teacher, she got her liberal arts
degree and began as an editor at Harper
Collins publications. Ms. Eng turned to
teaching after she realized how much she
loved education. Her previous teachers
showed her how important and enjoyable it
was to teach, which led her to Newton South
as a history teacher.
During the 1980's, Ms. Eng enjoyed
following the trends. She especially liked the
singer Madonna. Imitating the Borderline
video, she proudly wore her black bracelets
going to numerous concerts. She also liked
watching John Hughes movies and the “Brat
Pack” movie classics like Pretty in Pink, The
Breakfast Club and Valley Girl.

South. Out of the three, he feels that
South is the most familiar to him. The
classes, sports, students, teachers,
and curriculum all seem the same as
his high school experience, the only
differences being South's diversity and
Newton's economical status. The
essential difference between Mr.
Cascino's high school and South is the
technology, which he says “has
shredded the ability to concentrate on
one thing over an extended time and
changed our definition of human
interaction. Social media often leave
me feeling disconnected, but it seems
to work just fine for most at South."

Mr.Weintraub is an awesome English teacher who is obsessed
with movies and plays the ukulele. When he was in high school,
things were a little different. According to Mr. Weintraub,
wristwatches, “Weird” AL, and matzah-themed underpants were
in style. Even though things are different now, he is still like most
of us. He grew up with friends from various groups in his school,
from the athletes to the artists and everything in between.
Getting to where he is now, however, was quite the journey. He
just wanted to do something with his life that required him to use
his brain. On the way, he ended up shooting a bowling-themed
short film in a 24-hour bowling alley called Bowl-O-Rama in
Newington, CT. It was this experience, as well as many others,
that has shaped him up to be the amazing teacher that he is
today. As for you readers, Mr.Weintraub has some advice: “The
world is becoming more and more savage every day. The swine
are taking over! Make sure to stockpile canned goods and
double check that you have a working back-up generator for your
bunker!”

Mr. Smith is a part of the special education department, and is the
first special education teacher ever to receive the “Teacher of the
Year Award” voted by his peers. When Mr. Smith was in high school,
long hair, rock music, anti-establishment attitudes and miniskirts
were popular. He was the top of his class, he had great friends, he
played sports, and, as he said, “didn’t date much.” Like most
teenagers, he was not sure what he wanted to do with his life, and
thought he wanted to be a doctor. Unfortunately, however, chemistry
was his downfall. He then switched his major to psychology and that
was when he decided he wanted to become a special ed. teacher.
Flash forward again to the present and you will see that Mr. Smith is
still not just a teacher, but also is a dad, and a pretty cool one at that.
He and his son are in a band together and have written and recorded
some original songs.
